It is estimated that around 164 million Americans play video games across the US.

Some cognitive benefits are attributed to gaming like increasing focus and concentration and building a virtual community. However research suggests that gaming is one of the leading causes of sedentary illnesses, which we are calling Gamers Disease collectively. Here are some of the common issues arising out of excessive gaming –

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Many gamers suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in which there’s an inflammation of a nerve in the wrist causing pain and numbness.

Gamer’s Thumb

When the tendons that mobilize the thumb are inflamed, it leads to Gamer’s Thumb. It is popularly known as the “Playstation Thumb” too. Gamers who love to play video games using Playstation or Nintendos are more likely to suffer from this problem.

Obesity

One of the most common side effects of prolonged gaming is obesity. When a player is sitting at their gaming station for hours and eating fast food, it is a sure way to gain weight. A sedentary lifestyle is very dangerous as it keeps one from getting the right level of exercise or mobility.

Vision Problems

Playing video games for a prolonged amount of time can result in a compromised eyesight and eye strain. Vision problems may lead to migraines and discomfort while working. Extensive video gaming may also lead to seizures.

Ergonomics is one of the ways to deal with Gamer’s disease. We define ergonomics as a science that helps you adjust your environment to the perfectly suit your body. So instead of using computer accessories that are one-size-fits-all, they should be adjustable. The goal is to adapt the equipment and furniture to the user’s body type in such a way that the user can maintain a posture that is healthy as well as be comfortable and productive. Here are some ergonomic principles and tips to prevent Gamers’ disease.

1. Sit-stand regularly

Most gamers sit at their gaming stations for hours and this is one of the leading causes of Gamers’ disease. Make sure to stand up and move around or carry out some activities every hour to keep the circulation of your body flowing. You may also try using a standing desk and alternate between sitting and standing for an uninterrupted gaming experience.   Please fill out our Desk Finder form to receive customized recommendations from ergonomic experts.

2. Choose ergonomic keyboard & mouse

We recommend using ergonomic keyboards  and  ergonomic mouse designed to protect your wrist from any stress or injuries like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Gamers’ Thumb.

3. Sit on Ergonomic Chairs

If you want to fully enjoy your gaming experience, nothing beats having an Ergonomic Gaming Chair.

With an ergonomic gaming chair, you can enjoy your favorite video games while maintaining a good posture. Please fill out our Chair Finder form to receive customized recommendations from ergonomic experts.

3. Install a monitor arm

Invest in a monitor arm in order to take care of your posture. We highly recommend an articulating monitor arm for maximum adjustability.
