I'd been looking for a chair to pair with my drafting table and had wittled my choices down to the HAG Capisco and Herman Miller Aeron chair, both in stool height.
I fell in love with the Capisco when I saw it online. The problem was there were no showrooms in my city in which to test the chair, and I was dubious about spending $1,400 on a product I had no experience with. From my visits to my local Herman Miller store, and from trying out countless desk chairs there, I knew that seating is a very personal choice, one influenced by preference and body type, and I knew that the Aeron fit the bill on both of those accounts.
I was about to pull the trigger on the Aeron, and yet I couldn't get the Capisco off my mind. It was such a unique item—minimalist and eccentric yet practical and beautiful. I did a last-minute search online for a showroom in my area and again found none. But I did find a Craig's List ad for a nearby used Capisco. I felt like a bit of a heel wasting the seller's time when I had no intention of buying his specific chair (it wasn't stool height and the upholstery color was awful), but the ruse proved useful. I sat down and immediately knew the Capisco was the right chair for me. Interestingly, I asked the seller why he was parting with the chair, and he told me he'd bought many, many used chairs over the past month with the intention of trying them all and keeping the one he liked most and selling the rest. "So which chair did you finally choose?" I asked. "An Aeron," he said.
Which proves my point about the very personal nature of chairs.
For me, the Capisco was the winner, and I've been very pleased with my choice. My Capisco is sturdy and well-built. The Gabriel fabric in ochre is gorgeous. The seat and back are firm yet supportive and comfortable. Shipping took about two months on account of the fabric being on back order, but customer service was responsive and helpful. The chair arrived in perfect condition with all parts and instructions. Assembling the chair was easy and took little more than five minutes.
I'd read in other reviews that the Capisco "encourages movement" and is well-suited for "fidgeters." This is true; the chair offers three seating positions (forward, backward, and sideways). But rest assured, non-fidgeters can comfortably sit in the "normal" forward-facing position for many hours. I did, as some reviewers have commented, experience a slight numbness in my legs and glutes in my first few hours with the chair, but I found this sensation can be alleviated by adjusting the tilt, seat depth, and seat height.
Overall, highly satisfied.
