Standing Desk Finder

A height-adjustable (sit-stand) desk lets you switch between sitting and standing through the day - easing back and neck strain, boosting energy, and keeping your forearms at the right height in both positions. The right desk depends on your body height, the surface shape and size you need, the adjustment mechanism, and your budget.

How Does a Desk Finder Help?

Choosing a standing desk means balancing a few things at once: a height range that fits you sitting and standing, a surface shape and size that fits your space and equipment, an adjustment mechanism (electric or manual), and your budget. The Desk Finder collects those details, then our ergonomic specialists personally match height-adjustable desks that fit - and email you the recommendations, free and with no obligation.

It also asks whether you want a monitor arm included and captures any special requirements, so the recommendation covers your whole workstation. If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can also try standing desks in person at the ErgoDirect showroom in San Carlos, California - call 888-456-3746.

FAQ - Choosing the Right Standing Desk

A full standing desk replaces your desk with a height-adjustable frame and moves the whole surface between sitting and standing - the best long-term ergonomics and the cleanest look. A desk converter sits on top of your existing desk and raises just your keyboard and monitor, so it is lower cost and needs no new desk. Choose a full desk if you want a permanent, whole-surface solution; choose a converter to add sit-stand to a desk you are keeping.

Rectangular desks commonly run 36 to 82 inches wide and 24 to 29 inches deep - pick a width for the equipment you use and a depth of at least 24 inches so your monitor sits an arm's length away. If you work across two walls, an L-shaped (corner) desk gives more surface in the same footprint. The finder asks about your surface shape and size so we match a frame and top that fit your space.

Electric desks raise and lower at the push of a button - the easiest to use and best if you switch positions often, usually with height presets. Manual desks adjust with a pneumatic handle, a hand crank, or pin settings; they cost less and need no power, but take more effort to change. If you plan to sit and stand several times a day, electric is worth it; for occasional changes, a manual mechanism can be enough.

Your ideal desk height puts your forearms roughly parallel to the floor with elbows near 90 degrees, both seated and standing. That depends on your body height, so a height-adjustable desk that covers your sitting and standing elbow heights is the safe choice. Enter your height in the finder, or use our Workspace Planner to get exact sitting and standing numbers.

Most quality electric standing desks lift well over 100 lbs including the desktop, which comfortably covers multiple monitors, a laptop, and accessories - but the exact rating varies by frame, and heavier loads need a stronger dual-motor frame. If you run several large monitors or heavy equipment, tell us in the requirements box and we will match a frame rated for the load.

Both options exist. Many height-adjustable desks are sold as a complete desk with a matched top, while others are sold as a frame (legs) so you can pair it with your own or a custom desktop. The finder lets you pick a standard surface shape and size or ask for a custom desktop, so we can recommend a complete desk or a frame-plus-top combination.

Yes. Corner desks come as equal-corner shapes (both sides the same length) and offset-corner L-shapes (one side longer, left- or right-handed), on two-leg or sturdier three-leg frames for larger tops. Choose the corner shape and left or right orientation in the finder and we will match a height-adjustable corner desk to your space.

Yes - a monitor arm mounts to the desktop and rises and lowers with the desk, freeing surface space and letting you set screen height independently. The finder asks whether you want a single or dual monitor arm so we can include a compatible arm with your desk recommendation. For arm-specific help, use our Monitor Arm Finder.

Getting Your Desk Fit Right

Two things decide whether a standing desk will work for you - the height range and the surface. Check these before you buy, or answer them in the finder and we will check for you.

Find Your Desk Height

  1. Sit, then stand, in your normal working posture with elbows relaxed at about 90 degrees.
  2. Measure floor-to-elbow in each position - that is roughly your desk-surface height sitting and standing.
  3. Pick a desk whose height range covers both numbers.

Want exact figures from your body height? Our Workspace Planner calculates sitting and standing desk heights for you.

Choose Surface & Mechanism

  1. Pick a shape - rectangular for most, or an L-shaped corner if you work across two walls.
  2. Set a width for your equipment and a depth of at least 24 inches for arm's-length viewing.
  3. Choose the mechanism - electric for frequent, effortless changes, or manual to save cost.

Not sure? Leave it to us - the finder captures your space and we match a frame and top that fit.
